Teen Rhinoplasty
ABC Nightline's Lead Story - Interviewing Dr. Sam Rizk and his patient about teen rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery
Dr. Sam Rizk's Interview on the Today Show (NBC) with Mat Laeur on Teenage Rhinoplasty/Plastic Surgery
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), rhinoplasty was the most popular cosmetic procedure for teens in 2009. Rhinoplasty for teens involves different techniques than for adults. New York Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sam Rizk is at the forefront of teenage rhinoplasty, performing several thousand nasal operations every year.
According to Dr. Rizk, “Teens want a more dramatic change in the shape and size of their nose than many adults are seeking. As a surgeon, I enjoy working with young patients because they are often very specific in their surgical goals and are usually very appreciative of the outcomes we can achieve.” Many teens will request a celebrity nose, such as Ashlee Simpson, Ashley Tinsdale or Blake Lively, but this is not always possible or advisable.
Dr. Rizk works closely with all of his patients to meet and exceed their expectations. He utilizes state of the art computer imaging to demonstrate the potential changes he is able to make to the structure of the nose and profile. He also offers teen rhinoplasty patients the option of using his Nose Visualizer program on his website, www.drsamrizk.com, so they can further learn about what results may be possible based on their individual specifications.
There are many reasons teenage patients seek rhinoplasty surgery, some are cosmetic, but some reasons are due to functional breathing issues. It is important to select a New York rhinoplasty surgeon who understands both functional and cosmetic issues of the nose and who specializes in only rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery. Dr. Sam Rizk was voted by Tatler's yearly cosmetic surgery guide as one of the top rhinoplasty specialists in the world. He was also voted by the prestigious Castle Connelly Guide to the Top Surgeons as one of the top rhinoplasty surgeons in New York. The Castle Connelly Guide is a vote from the surgeon's peers and doctors and is not based on any PR.

A sports-related injury to the nose or a malformation of the nose can result in a crooked nose in a teenager who may also experience difficulty breathing. This can be repaired with a rhinoplasty, septoplasty, or a combination septorhinoplasty. The earliest a female can undergo a rhinoplasty is on average 14 years old and the earliest a male can undergo a rhinoplasty is 15 years of age. There are exceptions to the above ages where rhinoplasty can be performed earlier, if there is a gross deformity of the nose.
It is important for the teenager also to speak with his family and that the whole family is in agreement prior to proceeding with the rhinoplasty as the family is important as a support system after the surgery. Psychological counseling may also be recommended to evaluate the teenager's motivations, expectations, and maturity level. Teenagers tend to heal more rapidly after rhinoplasty and their nasal skin is more elastic so it shrinks faster. Also, it is important to use minimally invasive approaches in teenagers such as the 3d high definition rhinoplasty, pioneered by Expert New York Rhinoplasty Surgeon Dr. Sam Rizk, to allow a more rapid recovery and a natural result. Dr. Sam Rizk has also created a nasal rapid recovery kit for teenagers which contains medications to be used before and after the rhinoplasty, which allow a more rapid recovery, with less bruising and swelling.
Teenagers often come in to Dr. Sam Rizk's office on school breaks and the summer to undergo rhinoplasty. Sometimes the teenagers do the rhinoplasty between high school and college. Commonly, the teenagers will bring pictures of celebrities or models in magazines which have noses they like. It is important for the facial plastic surgeon to discuss what can realistically be achieved for the specific teenager based on their skin type, facial structure, chin position, etc. New York Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sam Rizk customizes the new nose to the patient's face and does not just give one type of nose. Sometimes Dr. Sam Rizk will use computer imaging to show the teenager what a possible result may look like and this is a method of communicating and understanding the teenager's goals and motivations. Computer imaging can also actually show any unrealistic expectations from the patient by noting their reactions to the newly imaged noses. If this happens where the perspective patient does not like any of the imaged noses then the patient may have unrealistic expectations and may not be a good candidate for the rhinoplasty.
