WHY IS FINDING A SURGEON WHO CAN PERFORM RHINOPLASTY BASED ON MY ETHNICITY IMPORTANT? WHY SHOULDN'T I GET A REGULAR RHINOPLASTY IF I'M NON-CAUCASIAN?

We may all be the same on the inside, but the same cannot be said for our exterior facial characteristics. If you are non-Caucasian (non-white or non-Indo-European) or have a non-Caucasian-looking nose, it is imperative that you find a facial plastic surgeon specializing in ethnic rhinoplasty to perform your nose surgery. Non-Caucasian noses are not the same as Caucasian noses; to achieve a successful outcome, you need to hire a rhinoplasty surgeon who understands this and possesses an in-depth knowledge of ethnic nasal characteristics.

How do non-Caucasian noses differ from Caucasian noses? Beyond the obvious difference in color, there are several things that distinguish “ethnic” noses from Caucasian noses. These differences relate to the shape of the facial skeleton; the thickness of the skin as well as its subcutaneous layer;and the configuration of the muscles of the face. Non-Caucasian noses usually have a low radix, broad base, flat dorsum, thick and short lower lateral (alar) cartilage, and round nostrils. These differences alter the projection of the nasal tip and result in a different nasolabial angle.

While noses of different ethnicities vary, there are a couple of characteristics that many non-white noses share in common: “weak” cartilage in the nasal tip, and thick skin. The thickness of the skin is related to sebaceous glands and subcutaneous fat. These factors can reduce nasal definition and angularity. Thick soft tissue can also result in a larger, more voluminous nose.

As a result of these pronounced anatomical differences, the goal of ethnic rhinoplasty is slightly different from that of Caucasian rhinoplasty. If you are not Caucasian, you should not request a Caucasian nose, because the result will not be aesthetically appealing. The goal of your ethnic rhinoplasty procedure will be to alter the nose in such a way as to preserve your ethnic characteristics while creating harmony and proper proportion with your other facial features.
