What Are Dr. Rizk’s Approaches To Cartilage Fat Reduction / Defatting?

In addition to employing suturing methods, grafting and modest cartilage reduction, two of the techniques Dr. Rizk uses in resculpting the nasal tip during rhinoplasty are defatting of the skin and cartilage fat reduction. These techniques help add definition to the tip.

Defatting involves removing fat from thick skin to make it thinner. If the nasal skin is too thick, it will be difficult to see some of the structural changes made during rhinoplasty (e.g., cartilage reduction). So nasal skin defatting is usually undertaken in order to make more apparent other changes made during the surgery. Dr. Rizk uses a high-definition telescope and small incisions to perform this stage of the procedure.

In addition to defatting in the tip, Dr. Rizk may perform nostril defatting, if necessary.

Dr. Rizk also performs fat reduction in the tip cartilages of some rhinoplasty patients. This technique removes the alar cartilage fat pads, a layer of fat located over the lower (alar) tip cartilages.

Again, cartilage fat reduction and nasal skin defatting are typically performed in conjunction with other rhinoplasty techniques to achieve the desired effect. For more information on various rhinoplasty techniques, contact Dr. Rizk today to schedule a consultation.
