Are there any risks associated with rhinoplasty?

Every surgical procedure comes with risks. However, the risks associated with rhinoplasty are relatively rare.

All rhinoplasty patients will experience some swelling and bruising around the eyes, though it should be noted that Dr. Rizk is renowned for his ability to minimize bruising.

There is a small risk that complications may arise during the rhinoplasty procedure (intraoperative complications). One possibility is complications related to anesthesia; Dr. Rizk uses an airway tube to ensure proper breathing in the rare case of an allergic reaction to anesthesia.

In the immediate postoperative period, complications such as bleeding and reactions to medication are a possibility. These rare complications are typically handled easily since the patient is still in the clinic.

“Late operative” complications, or those arising after discharge from the clinic, include bleeding, unexpected swelling, reactions to medication, and trauma resulting from a bump to the nose. If any of these occur, it is very important to contact Dr. Rizk immediately.

There is also a small risk of complications occurring after the recovery period. Often, this occurs when a patient fails to follow Dr. Rizk’s postoperative instructions. However, sometimes the nose just isn’t healing properly.

Other possible complications of rhinoplasty include infection, which can usually be prevented by taking antibiotics; skin problems caused by irritation from bandages or tape; skin necrosis (death of tissue); nasal blockage resulting from swelling inside the nose; and injury to or perforation of the septum. In addition, there is always the possibility that you won’t be satisfied with your results.

All of these possible complications can be discussed in consultation with Dr. Rizk.
