Aging Nose FAQs

What changes does the nose undergo as we age?
As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and begins to stretch. Additionally, the soft tissue and ligaments beneath our nose begin to soften and weaken. These factors combined with the force of gravity, will cause our nose to droop as we get older. By 50 to 60 years of age, the skin on the nose may begin to droop past the tip of the nose, giving the appearance of a bump on the nose. To worsen matters, the bone and tissue below the nose begin to lose volume as we age, further contributing to a droopy tip and the impression of a bump on the nose. The bone structure of the nose does not actually change shape that much as we age, but the supporting structures will begin to weaken. So although the person has not actually developed a bump, this change in the appearance of the nose can make a person look even older than they are.

I’m not happy with the way my nose looks now that I’m older. What can I do about it?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, you should make an appointment with Dr. Sam Rizk to see if you are a candidate for a rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty to restore the look of an aging nose does not require that any bones be broken, thus it can be less painful than other types of rhinoplasties. The main goal of the procedure is to elevate the tip using cartilage grafts, thus reducing the perception of a bump on the nose, and restoring youthfulness to the face.

Are there any medical complications associated with an aging nose?
As the nose ages and the tip beings to droop, some people may experience difficulty breathing through their nose. As aging progresses, nasal valve function may further diminish and progressive naval obstruction may occur. If your breathing has become impaired due to a drooping tip, you may want to strongly consider having a surgery to fix this problem. Dr. Sam Rizk can perform a relatively pain-free surgery using 3D endoscopic technology to lift the tip of your nose and restore normal breathing.

Can a rhinoplasty be combined with other cosmetic surgeries?
Rhinoplasty can be combined with a number of cosmetic surgeries that are design to reduce the signs of aging and restore youthfulness to your face. Facelifts, neck lifts, and eyelid surgery are commonly paired with rhinoplasty in older patients. Dr. Rizk is able to skillfully perform all of these procedures and is greatly experienced in working with older patients. The combination of multiple cosmetic surgical procedures can give the patient a truly refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. The majority of older patients do not want a dramatic change to their appearance – they simply want to diminish the signs of aging. Dr. Sam Rizk can help his older patients achieve their goals, whether they are cosmetic or also functional.
